The Selkies - One-Time Box Purchase

In January 2025, subscribers meet the Selkies.

The grottos of Birdmoss are sacred spaces. Ancient waterways carved out chapels from rocky outcroppings, and cathedrals from cliffs. They fill with water during the tides. The dark-eyed Selkies sing inside the grottos’ echoing chambers. They tenderly inspect and mend their chill-proof mantles, which allow them to take on their Seal forms.
 
Unlike the Strange Ones, the Selkies are not interested in the ways of humans, whom they call “the Men.” Too often, the humans are interested in them. Perhaps smitten by their large eyes and glossy hair, the humans try to reform them, encouraging them to peel off their wraps, wring out their hair, eat dry bread, and put on shoes. The humans shudder at their keening songs; each hopes to be the one to heal a Dark-Eyed One’s grief. The Selkies pay them no mind, diving deep beneath the night-colored waves, where the Men cannot follow. 

The Selkies Box includes an abundance of beautiful objects; hints and additions to expand the story; a mysterious document; and a lore card.

• Mysterious Document
• An instructional document is augmented with marginalia which will help you interpret clues.  It is available only in the Selkies Box.

• Lore Card
• The Selkies are introduced in a full-color collectible 4x6 inch lore card.  The artwork for this month's lore card was created by Joanna Rzepecka, a Warsaw, Poland-based illustrator. She says, "My work is inspired by biodiversity, mainly animals. Through my work, I'm trying to capture moments where nature is untouched by humans. Peaceful scenery, colors, and rough textures are some things that I enjoy the most."

• Flaky Sea Salt
• Made by evaporating the purest of seawater, this flaky salt is produced by the Selkies for their own use and also for trading with the Foxes and other creatures.  Its unique texture and snowy color are highly prized in Birdmoss. Crisp and briny, your sea salt has a myriad of uses:  use it as a finishing touch upon a special meal; place a pinch in a bowl and allow it to clear the energy of a room; add it to your altar tools; meditate on its intense taste. Each flake is linked to its source.

• Gentle Seal
• When you arrive, the Seals and Selkies are singing beneath a dove-colored sky. Some of their coats are brown; some silver; some blond, like sunshine; and some are a mottled blue-black.  A few of the Selkies have rolled back their wraps in order to comb their hair and feel the air on their skin. A Seal with large, wet eyes comes over and gives you an appraising look, then leads you to the group upon the rocks.

• Wave-Patterned Scarf
• At first, the Selkies assume you are one of the humans who sometimes interrupt them.  A few take their leave and dive into the water.  But when they realize that the Dreamer of stories and legends has arrived, the Selkies invite you to join them. To protect you from the cold, they loan you a shawl. It is the color of the ink-dark sea, traced with lighter ripples and waves.  Quicken it with a flake of salt to shore up your connection with the usually-retiring Selkies.

• Water Writing Supplies
• Under the waves, the Selkies move in graceful arcs, as if writing in a looping script. Their watery glyphs cannot be seen to be read. However, they give you a piece of unusual cloth to learn on. Use water as your ink, and you’ll be able to see the shapes, briefly, before they fade and disappear.

• Baroque Pearl Bracelet
  • You receive a bracelet which has been quickened with a lustrous keshi pearl. In Birdmoss, these slate blue pearls (with flashes of purple, green, and pink) are connected to deepening wisdom and intuition. One of the Selkies tells you: “Many Men think the pearls are our tears. They think we weep. Perhaps we sometimes so. But these are made by experience. They signify hard-won wisdom. You are growing in wisdom, just as we do.”
