When you reach the Grove, the Ferns respond to your presence. They were the first to know of your arrival in Birdmoss, and now they bow and dip as you meet. You stroke their fronds; some return the gesture. Others curl up, perhaps overwhelmed with shyness in the moment.
Your Sensitive Plant Kit includes seeds and peat growth medium.
- Grow indoors only because mimosa pudica can spread very quickly when not contained.
- Gently file or nick the seed coat so the lighter interior is exposed. Soak seeds overnight in water.
- Place peat in a cup or pot and add water so it expands. Plant 3 or 4 seeds 1/4" deep. Cover with clear plastic until seedlings appear. Place in sunny window and keep soil moist.
- Germination time: 1-3 weeks.
The sensitive plant responds to touch – or a sharp gust of wind – by curling its leaves inward. Although mimosa pudica is not a true fern, its delicate fronds would be at home in the Fern Grove. The Ferns Respond was featured in the Ferns Box (May 2023).
