In March 2026, subscribers encountered the Falcons.
Vigilant and unflappable, the Falcons of Birdmoss carry out serious work, an assignment that most creatures would avoid. Some seasons require judicious culling to balance the local ecosystem. The Falcons are efficient, their sharp talons providing ends that are mercifully quick. The Snails say, “Death is a bird,” and perhaps that bird is a Falcon.
Between hunts, they roost amongst the eaves and parapets of the Winter Palace. Believing that the gargoyles and grotesques upon the roof provide protection and some peace of mind, the Falcons build their simple scrape nests under the surveillance of their blank stone eyes.
The Falcons Box includes an abundance of beautiful objects; hints and additions to expand the story; a mysterious document; and a lore card.
Some items are available for individual purchase.
- Mysterious Document
- An instructional document is augmented with marginalia which will help you interpret clues. It is available only in the Falcons.
- Lore Card
- The Falcons is introduced in a full-color collectible 4x6 inch lore card. The artwork for this month's lore card was created by Joanna Rzepecka, a Warsaw, Poland-based illustrator. She says, "My work is inspired by biodiversity, mainly animals. Through my work, I'm trying to capture moments where nature is untouched by humans. Peaceful scenery, colors, and rough textures are some things that I enjoy the most."
- Weathered Grotesque
- Over time, the House of the Falcon has contributed both gargoyles and grotesques to line the Winter Palace’s parapets. The Palace’s busy season comes to an end as the snow melts from its roof. The resulting water pours through elaborate downspouts shaped like uncanny creatures. Quickened by the clear, cold runoff, these figures offer peace of mind, mental clarity, and protection from inner demons. It makes sense that the Falcons would build their spartan scrape nests on the Palace’s roof; its height reminds them of cliffs.
- Colorful Bird of Prey
- Here, you encounter the Falcons. Some are perched upon the roof’s embellishments, preening their feathers and making chittering sounds to each other. Others are stretching their wings, diving off the roof and then soaring upward. A particularly colorful young Falcon approaches you. Her talons and notched beak are breathtakingly sharp, but for now she is moving slowly and speaking softly.
- Brass Spyglass
- As you converse with the Falcon, it becomes clear that she sees more, and farther, than you can. She offers you a small spyglass, a tool used by the Falconers to follow the movements of their winged partners. It is a cunning device that collapses into a neat cylinder. In your world, you can attach it to your keychain or wear it as a pendant to support your ability to visualize the big picture in complicated scenarios.
- Stone of Analysis
- Falcon’s eye stone is a variation of tiger’s eye, featuring dark blue and slate gray striations. Some pieces even feature silvery hematite inclusions. In Birdmoss, Falcon’s Eye is associated with zooming into the details: seeing the fine strands that make up a feather, or the dash of a distant chipmunk. Place it on your work surface, or carry it in your pocket, when you need to analyze detailed information.
- A Leaf to Keep
- The Falcons build frugal, spare nests – called “scrapes” – by clearing low bowls in the debris which accumulates on ledges. The more artistically-inclined may build up a nest with a few leaves or twigs, but many scrapes are lined with gravel. Use this clay to fashion a leaf-shaped tray, reminiscent of a shallow scrape. Use it to collect small items like keys or earrings; or perhaps as a money bowl.
- Golden Aura
- The Winter Palace grows and changes every year, as the Houses that convene at it each contribute pieces of furniture, textiles, and construction materials to make it more and more comfortable and elaborate. The Falcons added the rooftop grotesques many years ago. In this season, they are using real gold leaf to add a glimmering aura to carvings and frames throughout the Palace. You receive a piece that you can use to quicken your leaf tray, your grotesque, or another item close to your heart.
