The Changeling - One-Time Box Purchase

In August 2025, subscribers encountered the Changeling.

Every once in a while, an unusual child appears in the village, left in a cradle or occasionally on a doorstep. Sometimes, the family’s sleeping baby is replaced with another; or with a magicked piece of bog oak; or with a crude poppet enchanted to resemble the original infant.

Most families assume that the Strange Ones are involved. Perhaps the Strange Ones hope their own offspring will gain life experience outside of Peregrin, then return home later, well-educated and traveled. Other stories say that the swaps are not always simple, and may involve rearranging children across several lands or even other worlds. There are even rumors that the Strange Ones have delivered some Birdmoss children to families in our world.

The Changeling Box includes an abundance of beautiful objects; hints and additions to expand the story; a mysterious document; and a lore card.

• Mysterious Document
• An instructional document is augmented with marginalia which will help you interpret clues. It is available only in the Changeling Box.

• Lore Card
• The Changeling is introduced in a full-color collectible 4x6 inch lore card. The artwork for this month's lore card was created by Joanna Rzepecka, a Warsaw, Poland-based illustrator. She says, "My work is inspired by biodiversity, mainly animals. Through my work, I'm trying to capture moments where nature is untouched by humans. Peaceful scenery, colors, and rough textures are some things that I enjoy the most."

• Quickened Seed
• The Foxes cultivate a small tree, Perspicientia, which is native to Birdmoss. Its oversized seeds are known to increase one’s powers of perception. The Foxes quicken the seeds with sap, then preserve and drill them to creating viewing devices. Looking through your seed-bead’s tiny peephole, you see that some objects in the cottage sparkle, even in the dimming light.

• Childhood Artifact
• A few simple toys clutter the floor of the nursery. You are drawn to a round, pale object. It’s a diminutive gourd, dried so that it’s hard and light. Birdmoss children cherish them: making spinning tops and rattles; wrapping them in cloth and playing with them like dolls; carving them into dippers and teacups.

• Caterpillar and Chicory
• The golden glow guides you to a deck of playing cards, probably used by the children of the house for playing games and learning divination. Their designs feature chicory blossoms and Caterpillars. Chicory flowers bloom for only a day but, perhaps because of their ephemeral nature, can help reveal the unknown. The Caterpillar carries its future inside itself.

• Nurturing Ring
• Your seed-viewer leads you to a crack between the floorboards. You find a long-missing ring. It fits your finger perfectly. In Birdmoss, the spiral indicates the process of looking inward. If your ring features yellow agate, it will help you pursue physical health and joy. If it’s set with lapis lazuli, it will help you nurture your emotional security and peace.

• Geometric Charm
  • The nursery’s prior occupants were, at some point, working on a series of geometric ornaments and garlands. There is power in ratios and shapes.  Assemble this charm and hide a piece of prehnite inside before sealing the final seams. Prehnite is known as the healer’s stone in Birdmoss. Hang your charm in a spot you pass daily. It will remind you that sometimes the thing you need to heal is hidden inside.

• Dreamer’s Lullaby
  • The Foxes blend this tea, rich in lavender, to foster richer nighttime visions. Chamomile brightens dark corners. Seek a dream within a dream. Curl up on the rug and Dream into the Forest.
