A few simple toys clutter the floor of the nursery. You are drawn to a round, pale object. It’s a diminutive gourd, dried so that it’s hard and light. Birdmoss children cherish them: making spinning tops and rattles; wrapping them in cloth and playing with them like dolls; carving them into dippers and teacups.
This variety of gourd is grown, not as a food, but as a versatile toy and crafting material. They are known by many names: "spinner gourds," "Tennessee spinning gourds," "dancing gourds," and "jewelry gourds." They are diminutive, measuring about 1-2 inches in diameter. With proper technique – usually a finger-snapping motion – they can be spun like tops.
Childhood Artifact was featured in the Changeling Box (August 2025).
Photo props are not included.
