The Swamp is rich with life. Some plants are of gargantuan proportions, while others are tiny and whimsical. Plant your own miniature water garden with ferns so minuscule that they resemble moss. You receive a pressed glass bowl, with a gently rippled rim that evokes the surface of the swamp. Wash your bowl and fill it with filtered or spring water, then spread your ferns on the surface. Place your garden in indirect sunlight and change the water on a weekly basis.

When your package arrives, please open it right away.  It includes live ferns that will be ready for some light and air after their dark journey through the mail.

Please place your ferns in water (spring or dechlorinated is best) and give them a little sunshine.  At your convenience, arrange them in the provided glass bowl to create a miniature water garden.

It is normal to see dark green, pale green, brown, and even red leaves among your ferns. This variety of fern, the smallest ever discovered, can turn a pretty red in the sun! You may also find some dark stringy parts; those are roots and they'll grow downward in the water.

Azolla caroliniana (also called Fairy Moss) is native to much of the US, but it can grow quickly when unconstrained.  I recommend it for indoor desktop gardens so it doesn't take over your neighborhood!

As your ferns grow, change their water weekly. You can choose to supplement their water with a little phosphorus, but that's optional. Keep them in indirect sunlight with an occasional "field trip" to a spot with full, bright sun. If they begin to overgrow their little bowl, transfer them to a larger dish.

If your box is delayed in the USPS system and your ferns are damaged by the heat or cold, please reach out to me at shannon@birdmoss.com so I can help.

The Miniature Water Garden was featured in the Swamp Box (May 2025).

Photo props are not included.

Love this!

It took a little while, but the garden is thriving. I transfered it to a larger glass container, and I'm going it will continue to grow. Is there anything I need to do to help it thrive?

Such a cute concept but ferns arrived dead

I absolutely love Birdmoss and all the adorable items. I was especially excited about this miniature water garden. Even though I paused my subscription, I ordered the water garden separately. Unfortunately, the ferns arrived dead. Despite their obvious expiration, I put them in fresh water, followed all the directions...but no luck. I tried to resuscitate them for weeks. The glass bowl is cute, but fairly expensive considering I did not get the living ferns that were to make it the water garden it was supposed to be.

Hi, Lynda! Thank you for your feedback. I’m sorry that the ferns you received wasn’t what you were hoping for. I’ve just sent you an email to help resolve this issue. Feel free to reach out to shannon@birdmoss.com if you need further assistance.
